Modern Drumming
About Course
Modern Drumming is an in-depth course that builds the skills modern players rely on every day, from clean technique and reading to creative vocabulary and real-world musicianship. Led by drummer and educator Brandon Scott, you will tighten your fundamentals, expand your rhythmic toolkit, and learn how to think musically behind the kit.
You will start by refining the basics that drive confident playing: daily technique routines, note values, reading fluency, and rudiment applications organized on the grid. Then you will get a practical tour of the drum kit, dialing in coordination across kick, snare, hi-hat, and the left foot for pocket, clarity, and speed. Topics then progress to patterns and displacement, including the Rosanna half time shuffle, triplet vocabulary, and approaches for moving ideas around the bar line. You will also dig into odd time, polyrhythms, and the relationship between 8th and 16th note triplets, finishing with chart reading, quintuplet studies, and strategies for locking in with other musicians.
The emphasis throughout is musical context. You will see each concept applied to grooves and fills you can actually use, learn how to internalize time, and develop the listening habits that make bandmates want to call you back. By the end, you will have a clear practice path and a deeper understanding of how to shape feel, phrase across bar lines, and support a song.
