Dave Previ is a versatile drummer, educator, and writer with over two decades of experience behind the kit. His journey began in 7th grade, when a spontaneous solo during a school performance sparked a lifelong love for drumming. From that moment on, Dave knew he was destined to play—and he hasn’t stopped since.
A native of Virginia, Dave honed his craft in marching bands, orchestras, jazz combos, rock, funk, blues, reggae, and even an "alien band," embracing every opportunity to grow as a performer. He later studied at West Virginia University and The Drummers Collective in New York City, where he trained under world-class instructors including Steve Fidyk, Peter Retzlaff, Ian Froman, Kim Plainfield, and Vince Cherico.
Dave has toured the East Coast, held private teaching positions at The Contemporary Music Center, and worked with numerous artists across styles—from Nevereven, Willamette, and The RitMo Collective, to Pat McGee, Mieka Pauly, and George Grant and The Mighty Templars. His studio and live performance background make him a highly adaptable and expressive drummer.
Since joining Sound Collective in 2020, Dave has focused on teaching rudiments, technique, groove, rock, and funk drumming, helping students build a strong rhythmic foundation and confident timekeeping. He’s also a contributing writer for Modern Drummer Magazine, sharing his insights with drummers around the world.
With a teaching career that began in 1998, Dave Previ brings not only a wealth of experience but a passion for rhythm that’s infectious—equipping students with the tools, technique, and mindset to succeed in any musical setting.
