Studio Essentials: Digital Engineering

Studio Essentials: Digital Engineering focuses on advanced in-the-box (ITB) mixing and mastering techniques using modern DAWs and plug-ins. Students will develop skills in high-precision equalization, dynamics processing, spatial design, signal routing, automation, and final delivery for multiple platforms. The goal is to produce professional mixes that leverage the full advantages of digital processing and workflow.

Topics & Goals

• Digital Session Setup
  Learn to configure DAW sessions for CPU efficiency, latency management, and precise gain staging.
• Precision Equalization
  Apply advanced EQ methods including linear phase, dynamic EQ, and surgical resonance removal.
• Digital Compression & Limiting
  Use advanced compression, multi-band processing, and limiting for transparent and loudness-compliant mixes.
• Spatial Processing
  Design mixes with convolution reverb, algorithmic reverb, and delay-based widening techniques.
• Signal Flow Management
  Build efficient routing systems using subgroups, parallel processing, and stem workflows.
• Mix Bus Processing & Automation
  Apply bus compression, subtle tonal shaping, and detailed automation to enhance dynamics and movement.
• Integrated Mixing & Mastering
  Combine mixing and mastering in a single workflow, ensuring translation across playback platforms.
